Name the job first
Are you preparing a spool that needs a specified drying cycle, keeping a prepared spool protected between prints, or feeding directly from a container? Write those as separate requirements. Product names such as dry box are not detailed enough to establish which functions are included.
Inspect the bundle
Polymaker's PolyDryer separates the powered dock from removable boxes. A box-only listing is not a complete powered drying system. For that type of setup, compare one dock plus your intended number of boxes against the complete alternative, rather than comparing the lowest displayed prices.
Plan the handoff
Map the route from dryer to storage to printer. Decide where each spool lives after its cycle and how often you will open the container. A system that is awkward to use may be a worse purchase even if its specification sheet looks more capable.
Use a repeatable record
Record the material, cycle, storage arrangement and print settings together. If a print changes, that record gives you something to investigate. Avoid changing several variables at once and then crediting the dryer for all of the improvement. A hygrometer reading inside a box is a measurement at that sensor, not a direct measurement of water inside the filament.
Does a dry box replace a filament dryer?
A sealed container with desiccant is primarily a storage arrangement. Do not assume it completes the temperature-and-time process specified by your filament maker. A powered dryer and protected storage often perform consecutive jobs: prepare the spool using the applicable instructions, then limit its exposure between uses. Some commercial systems combine these jobs, but the exact bundle determines what is included.
Check desiccant and the humidity indicator
Choose desiccant and any regeneration method according to its supplier’s instructions and the container’s limits. A humidity indicator helps you understand conditions where the sensor sits. It is not a direct measurement of moisture inside the filament. Opening the container, room conditions and the storage arrangement can change the reading; record these when comparing observations.
